Project Overview Please be advised of an upcoming temporary road closure affecting South Passage. BNSF Railway has scheduled a comprehensive track maintenance project to fully replace the crossing planking. To maximize efficiency during this closure, City crews will simultaneously utilize the block to complete localized street patching adjacent to the crossing.
To facilitate a safe work zone for both railroad and city crews, the crossing will be completely closed to all through traffic.
Schedule and Timeline
-
Closure Start Date: Monday, June 1, 2026
-
Anticipated Duration: Approximately two (2) weeks (subject to railroad operations and weather)
Important Traffic Impact & Detour Notice We understand that the timing of this project is highly inconvenient. This closure coincides with both the final week of the school year and the ongoing Heritage Blvd closure.
Because BNSF Railway entirely controls the scheduling and timeline of their infrastructure repairs, the City is unable to delay or alter this start date.
-
Main Street Delays: With both South Passage SE and Heritage Blvd closed simultaneously, a significant amount of local traffic will be rerouted through Main Street. Motorists should anticipate heavy congestion and slower travel times, particularly during morning and afternoon school commute hours.
-
School Transportation: Local school district transportation departments have been notified of the compounding closures so they can adjust bus routes.
Families, commuters, and residents are strongly encouraged to map out alternative routes.
Agency Roles & Coordination
-
The Railroad's Role: The track maintenance project, including its timeline, is entirely managed and executed by BNSF Railway.
-
The City's Role: To help ease the impact on our local roads, the City will actively manage traffic control and street passage directly surrounding the site, while completing targeted street patching to improve the overall roadway surface.
We sincerely appreciate the community's patience and cooperation as we navigate these overlapping infrastructure challenges as safely and efficiently as possible.
