Boat Registration

For Driver and Vehicle registration and information please visit the MNDriveInfo.org website. The website has many resources for locating and procedure of boat registration.

There are no doubt many, many lakes and rivers throughout Minnesota that make for great boating, fishing, and water sports. To take full advantage of Minnesota's waters, boaters in the state should ensure that their boats are registered with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR).

You must register your boat in Minnesota in person at any deputy registrar of motor vehicles location. There is an online option for renewal of boat registration in Minnesota, but original registration must be conducted in person.

To register your boat in Minnesota, you may appear at a deputy registrar of motor vehicles location. This is the same location as regular vehicle registration and other services, so Minnesota motorists may be able to do both vehicle and boat registration during the same visit.Boat registration may also be done at the DNR License Center, which is located at the following address:

• 500 Lafayette Road
• St. Paul, MN 55155
When registering a boat in Minnesota for the first time, you should be prepared to provide the following information:

• Length of the boat, measured from foremost bow to rearmost stern, not including rudders or other attachment
• The boat manufacturer
• The hull material, such as metal, plastic, or wood
• Propulsion type
• Year and model of boat
• Hull identification number (HIN)
• Proof of paid sales tax (sales receipt is sufficient)

To renew Minnesota boat registration, you may again visit a registrar of motor vehicles location or the DNR License Center in St. Paul in person. Alternatively, you may also renew your Minnesota boat registration online.
